A liver transplant in 2012 after a long illness gave me a second chance at a career in academia, as well as a cherished opportunity to return to the classroom. The ravages of rare genetic liver disorder left me with less than a month to live. Such a harrowing trial and dramatic reprieve obviously transforms not only your body, but your spirit, and I have experienced a rejuvenation that can only be described as miraculous.

Having survived such an odyssey has filled me with an overwhelming gratitude for the professionals who made it possible. While I cannot reciprocate their care directly, I am motivated by a desire to pay forward through the pursuit of my passion for teaching, and in leaving behind a legacy of writing about the subjects I love.
